I don't get it!

I'm late to this particular party and I'm having a problem getting in the "party mood". It seems you can't go anywhere for the past six months or so and not hear about how wonderful TWILIGHT is. Really, it seem that anyone who reads anything has read or is reading TWILIGHT. I love love love to read and should seriously consider a 12 step program for out of control book buyers, but this one is just not doing it for me. First of all it's about a vampire. I've never been into science fiction and books about vampires smack of science fiction to me. I decided this is one book series trend I was going to sit out. I was fine with that decision, truly. But my friends just wouldn't hear of it. Everyone kept telling me, "You just HAVE to read it!". So, okay, curiosity finally got the best of me and my friend, Cinnamon, at work lent me her copy. I've had this book now for over a month and I've picked it up about 5 times and have finally make it to page 148 of 498.

I can see why young girls might like this book. It's very highschoolish to me. I'm determined to get through it now and keep waiting for that "oh my gosh, this is soooo good" feeling to overtake me and keep me up reading when I should be sleeping. I don't see it happening though. I won't watch the movie until I've finished reading the book. In the meantime I have a huge pile of delicious books screaming at me to read them but I know that if I give in to that temptation I will never finish TWILIGHT.

So, what do you all think of this book? Am I the only one that doesn't think this book is the best thing since sliced bread?

Thank God, someone finally said this publicly! Although I have friends who read this book, I will not. For the reason you stated, it's about vampires. Vampires, witches, wizards, (Harry Potter), etc. are a big no-no in our household. Not to say it probably isn't well written. I'm sure it is. It's meant to draw ya in. ;o) Just my opinion.

I just finished 'Embrace Me' by Lisa Samson. I do not read for the sake of reading. It has to be a REAL page turner. Amazing book! Life changing.;o)

Have a good one!

I haven't read it but it's not the kind I would anyway. Now I know I wouldn't. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about it. I'm like you and love to read too. I'd find something else to read. There are lots of good ones out there. Have you read Time is like a River? I just finished it and like it alot.

For me...an incurable romantic, there's something very sensual, sexy and "forever" about this book. The Edward character is just simply sizzling in my mind! I only read Twilight, electing to NOT get absorb in the series. I also loved the movie. I've never been into fantasy movies or books..such as The Hobbit, Harry Potter, etc. but I considered Twilight more of a magical love story...and was very touched by the enduring love aspect. I had to be "talked" into reading it as well, especially since it was a book made for teenage girls! I felt somewhat silly deciding to read such a thing. But, I am glad I did and will love it forever since I am the type who has certain books imprinted on me! I totally understand how you would not find it as interesting or exciting as others. It's okay! You gave it your best shot! Move on without guilt! LOL! Blessings! Lisa

I've read some Ann Rice and liked it, though I do prefer non-fiction, so I have no problem with Vampires, BUT this did nothing for me. First I thought what a nice little incarnadine apple. Hmm. That is about as much emotion as I worked up for it. I read a little more and then gave it away.
I'm reading Eats, Shoots & Leaves by Lynne Truss right now and loving it. ~Mary

I say put it down and read a book that is calling you!

Like you, I'm not into vampires or science fiction. My daughter has read the book and the entire series keeps telling me it's more a romantic type. Uh huh, whatever it's still not calling me.

I've had several try to get me to read the book too and I just say I MIGHT when I have time ... I just won't have the time!! :-)

Oh thank God! I thought I had become jaded.

I went through the whole Anne Rice/LeStat phase. No need rehashing. I haven't read the Twilight series, so I can't comment other than to say that it would be hard to top Rice's brilliance on the subject.

I just read Twilight a couple of weeks ago. Being that I knew it was written for teenage girls, it just wasn't a book high on my TBR list. Plus, I really like to read paperbacks, NOT Trades because of the size/portability issue. Still, I saw the movie would soon be out and I usually enjoy it more if I've read the book, AND, most importantly, I caught it on sale AND in the small paperback size. It seemed to me the universe was saying "Dude.. What more do I have to do to get you to just go ahead and read this?

So, I bought it and read it. Nothing too surprising here, but still a decent read. I bought the second book today, along with the 3rd Sookie book, so I guess this means I will be finishing the series. Eh! Not a book I would push on someone, but good enough to get me to read the second one.

I LOVE to read; but when I read that is all I want to do. Can not put the book down! Now I LOVE blogger and I can not get off and get anything done! hehe Wonder which is worse?? Hubby is as bad with TV as I am with computer. lol Guess we all have things like that in our life. Hope you have a blessed week. Hugs, Janie

Have not read it, have no desire to either. I did enjoy Harry Potter, but there is a difference between magic and such, and high school crushes with a tame vampire.

Have I mentioned lately how much I like you? :)

A few things. First of all, I have not read this series, so I am basing my comments on what I've read about the book, and you can't escape reading or hearing about it. I happen to love vampires, whether it's in book or movie form. But after enjoying such dark delights as Anne Rice's vampire chronicles, I can't imagine that this series would come even close to grabbing me. Part of the appeal of vampires is that they're sexy...and DANGEROUS. I mean, c'mon...they want to drink your blood. They want to KILL YOU. Taking that out of the equation and making the main vampire such a wimp is just uninteresting to me. Even Wesley Snipes in the Blade movies, while trying not get his blood from human sources, was a mean mofo.

I read recently that Stephen King (I love horror, as you may have guessed by now, and I always enjoy his books) said that while both JK Rowling and Meyers are writing to young adults, the difference is that Rowling is actually a good writer. He was NOT kind to Meyers, basically saying that she's just not a very good writer.

I have yet to read one of the Harry Potter books, and do you know why? Because one too many people told me "You HAVE to read this." For the same reason, I have never seen the movie "Titanic." It became a joke with my friends, and they often tell me "You HAVE to read it/see it/hear it!" The more I hear that, the more I dig in my heels and say, "Oh no I don't!" LOL

If you want to put the book down, go for it. Life is too short to read books that don't grab you. I've had some struggles with some of my book club books, but that's a literary commitment I chose to make.

So no...you're not alone in this!

Hugs, Beth

I admit, this series has not appealed to me, and yet a friend whose opinion I respect did enjoy it. I could never get into Anne Rice either.

A friend talked me into trying the series. Her advice above all I would take...she is well written, intelligent (you get the idea). I loved it. It was a step away from what every one else was writing at the moment. As another commenter said it's a haunting romance. I tend to read really dark horror. So on any level this was definitely light.

I'm also a fan of Stephen King and Anne Rice. As for what Stephen King said about Meyers...honestly I thought it was more of a crushed ego that someone made fame so easily, when he had to work so hard for it. I really don't appreciate one author putting down another. I have read none of the J.K. Rowling series at all. That to me was definitely more primed for kids than the Twilight series.

I think at the end of the day you just have to make up your own mind in what appeals to you. What one person might gush over, another might be turned off by it. It's a matter of taste. I hope you go with your own gut and don't allow any of us to influence what you think.

Pick up another book and enjoy reading again. Who knows maybe after all the hoopala has died down you'll want to try the Twilight series again. Your in my thoughts dear friend. (Hugs)Indigo

I am very into the series and I think it's because I am so far away from that teen time of my life that to picture love and the biblical references was something remarkable. I will say though that as much as book four got going good, I was disappointed in the way it worked towards the ending.

This series is one of those where you can either like it or you won't.

Sort of like sushi.

btw..every time I come here I'm in a good mood by the colors of you template.
so thank you. :)

I have to say I agree with most of your commenters. If you are really not feeling it by now, return the book to its rightful owner and move on. What's the point if you're not enjoying it. We're not in high school anymore with mandatory books for reading. If it hasn't hooked you by now, it's not gonna! Just rent the movie and be done with it.
